Your Breast Implant Options

Dr. Gupta can enhance the shape and size of your breasts using saline or silicone breast implants. He will review your options during consultation, and help you select the best type and size of implant based on your breast augmentation goals and body type. You will be able to “try on” different implants to compare your options and pick your favorite.

Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution. One advantage of saline implants is they can be placed through a small incision. The empty shell of the implant is folded up and inserted into the breast, and then filled to the desired capacity. If a saline implant leaks or ruptures, it will almost immediately collapse, and the body will safely absorb the saltwater.

Silicone implants are composed of a cohesive gel material. They come pre-filled from the manufacturer, and require a slightly larger incision for placement. If a silicone implant develops a leak or rupture, the implant will stay largely intact because of the cohesive nature of the gel. The most significant advantage of silicone implants is they look and feel more similar to natural breast tissue than saline implants.

Breast implants come in two shapes: round and teardrop. Round implants have equal projection on both the top and bottom. Teardrop shapes have a gentle slope, with more volume on the bottom. Round implants will create more of a “push-up” bra look with a lot of fullness on the top of the breast, whereas teardrop implants will look more similar to a natural sloped breast shape.

Breast implants are either smooth or textured. Traditionally, breast implants came with a smooth outer shell. However, the nature of the smooth shell made implants susceptible to two potential problems: capsular contracture and implant rotation. Capsular contracture occurs when the body forms scar tissue around the implant. The scar tissue squeezes the implant, causing it to get hard and painful. Implant rotation can occur when the implant pocket is too large, and the implant has room to rotate. This is more of a concern with teardrop implants, which need to stay in place to maintain their natural sloped shape.

Textured implants, which have tiny nooks and crannies, reduce the risk of capsular contracture and implant rotation. The body grows tissue into these nooks and crannies to keep the implant in its proper position and prevent the formation of scar tissue.

What You Need to Know about Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is typically performed on an outpatient basis. Anesthesia will be administered prior to surgery for your comfort. Because of the anesthesia’s effects, you will need to have a companion drive you home from surgery and stay with you overnight.

Dr. Gupta will begin by making the breast implant incisions in one of three locations:

1. On the areola
2. In the natural fold underneath the breast
3. Through the armpit

Dr. Gupta will follow the incision pattern that you’ve decided on ahead of time, during consultation. Through the incision, he will create a small pocket either over or underneath the pectoral (chest) muscle. The placement location will also be pre-determined during your consultation.

After creating the breast pocket, he will insert either the saline implant shell or the pre-filled silicone implant. He will slowly fill the saline implant shell to the desired capacity. When he’s finished placing (and filling) the implants, he will close the incisions with sutures and place a supportive bra around the chest to help the breasts heal.

Breast augmentation alone can provide a slight lift to the breasts. However, if your breasts sag significantly, you may want to consider combination breast augmentation with lift.

You should plan to take one to two weeks off from work and your normal routine following surgery. During this time, it’s critical to avoid strenuous activity and exercise, including bending and lifting your arms. Dr. Gupta will follow up with you regularly after surgery to check your healing progress, remove sutures and let you know when to return to work, exercise and other daily tasks. After recovering from surgery, you will be able to start enjoying your new voluptuous look!

You deserve to look good and feel great about yourself! Breast augmentation with Dr. Gupta can help you achieve your desired appearance. For more information about the procedure, please contact Gupta Plastic Surgery by calling (858) 408-6100.
