Tips for a Rapid Recovery

After a plastic surgery procedure, it is normal for patients to feel anxious and excited to return to everyday life. Dr. Abhay Gupta understands that his patients want to accelerate the recovery process and enjoy their transformation as soon as possible. Here, he has provided five tips for a safe and speedy recovery.

Stay Ahead of the Pain

If you develop pain or discomfort after surgery, medication is available to you. Don’t try to battle the pain — instead, stay in control of it by taking medication as prescribed by Dr. Gupta. If you want to switch to an over-the-counter medication, avoid aspirin or ibuprofen meds; ask the doctor about taking Tylenol instead.

Wear Compression Garments as Directed

After surgery, the treated area will be bandaged and a compression garment may be placed. This garment puts gentle pressure on the treated area to control swelling and bruising and prevent fluid from building up. It can also help with skin retraction during healing. Wear the garment as directed and do not remove it prematurely.

Move Around (Slowly)

Getting a little bit of “exercise” — i.e., short, slow walks — is important during the recovery phase. It helps the body heal, reduces pain and can prevent constipation from the pain meds. Make sure you get up every two to three hours to walk around; take your caregiver with you if you feel woozy.

Any activity that is more strenuous than walking must be avoided for approximately four to eight weeks. Pushing your body too hard too soon could actually impair healing and lead to complications. Dr. Gupta will clear you to return to your normal routine but until then, stick with walking or gentle stretching (depending on your procedure).

Avoid Cigarettes and Alcohol

Smoking can interfere with the natural wound healing process, and alcohol suppresses the immune system. Avoid smoking for at least two weeks after surgery, and refrain from drinking as well.

Avoid Salty Foods

Eating a lot of salt can increase swelling. Eat a low-sodium diet and drink plenty of water to hydrate yourself. Avoid diuretics, which can lead to dehydration.

Keep in mind that these are general recommendations and everyone’s recovery is unique. Dr. Gupta will give you detailed post-operative instructions that should be followed to the letter; if you have questions at any point in the process, he is only a phone call away.
