The summer months are wonderful for many reasons, but they aren’t so kind to our skin — in warm climates like San Diego, the sun, sweat and saltwater can wreck an otherwise gorgeous complexion. To help you fight off the summer elements and enjoy glowing skin, Dr. Abhay Gupta offers his best tips below.
Avoid sun damage by investing in a new sunscreen and using it regularly. Toss any old, expired bottles of sunscreen and stock up on a fresh bottle or two. Anytime you anticipate being outdoors, apply at least a shot glass size of sunscreen to your entire body and a teaspoon’s worth to your face and neck. Reapply every one or two hours while in the sun. If you’re worried about messing up your makeup, look for a setting spray with SPF that you can apply over your makeup.
Drinking lots of water is one of the best things you can do for the health and beauty of your skin. Water helps flush out toxins that accumulate in our bodies and keep skin looking clear and dewy.
Exfoliating, or removing, dead, dull skin cells is key to glowing, soft skin during the summer. You can exfoliate by using a granular body scrub in the shower. Or, you can use a face cleanser with glycolic acid, which is an exfoliating acid. Don’t forget to follow up your exfoliation session with a great moisturizer.
To deepen the color of your tan without exposing yourself to the sun’s harmful rays, try a sunless tanner product. Any beauty store will offer plenty of choices in creams or lotions that gradually build up your glow. Or, try a professional salon that offers spray tans.
If you’re having difficulty finding over-the-counter skin care products to protect or nourish your skin, Dr. Gupta and our team of skin care professionals would love to help. We will sit down with you to select medical-grade skincare products formulated for your specific needs. Or, we may recommend a treatment like a chemical peel or laser skin resurfacing to soften the appearance of lines, wrinkles, sun damage or other imperfections.
