Common Misconceptions about Breast Reduction

In the age of the Internet, anyone can publish misinformation and share it with millions of readers. This is how myths and misconceptions are born and circulate among plastic surgery patients. In an effort to keep his breast reduction candidates properly informed, Dr. Abhay Gupta thought it would be a good idea to clear up common misconceptions about breast reductions.

I won’t be able to breastfeed after surgery.

Whether you are able to breastfeed after surgery depends on factors like the surgeon’s technique and the amount of breast tissue that is removed. Also, keep in mind that not every woman is able to breastfeed, regardless of whether she has breast surgery. Since there are several variables at play, it is impossible to guarantee that you will or will not be able to breastfeed after surgery. This is something to discuss with Dr. Gupta during your surgical consultation.

I will lose all nipple sensitivity after surgery.

It is not always the case that breast reduction patients lose sensitivity in their nipples after breast reduction. In fact it has been shown that nipple sensation can actually improve after breast reduction surgery since the nerves to the nipple are no longer stretched. Many are able to retain sensitivity (although it may change slightly). Upon examining your breasts, Dr. Gupta will outline his plan for surgery and discuss the chances of losing nipple sensitivity.

I will be in a lot of pain after surgery.

Everyone has a different pain threshold, although breast reduction is not an exceptionally painful procedure. Any pain or discomfort can be controlled with medication as prescribed by Dr. Gupta.
