Weight Loss FAQs Frequently Asked Questions

What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide belongs to a class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, or GLP-1 RAs. It mimics the GLP-1 hormone, released in the gut in response to eating. One role of GLP-1 is to prompt the body to produce more insulin, which reduces blood sugar (glucose). For that reason, health care providers have used semaglutide for more than 15 years to treat Type 2 diabetes. But GLP-1 also interacts with the parts of the brain that suppress your appetite and signal you to feel full. When used in conjunction with diet and exercise, it can cause significant weight loss—and a reduced risk of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease—in people who are obese or overweight.

Why use Semaglutide medication for weight loss?

Here are some reasons why semaglutide may be used for weight loss:

  • Appetite Suppression: Semaglutide appears to reduce appetite, leading to decreased food intake. This effect can contribute to weight loss, as individuals consume fewer calories.
  • Improved Insulin Sensitivity: By improving insulin sensitivity, semaglutide may help the body utilize glucose more effectively. This can have positive effects on metabolism and contribute to weight loss.
  • Slowed Gastric Emptying: Semaglutide slows down the rate at which the stomach empties, leading to a feeling of fullness for a longer period. This can help individuals eat smaller portions and reduce overall calorie intake.
  • Caloric Expenditure: Some research suggests that semaglutide may increase energy expenditure, potentially contributing to weight loss.

Is there a required BMI to qualify for semaglutide medication?

The minimum BMI to qualify for semaglutide treatment is 25 or higher.

How do I know if I am eligible for semaglutide?

During your initial in-office consultation with Dr. Gupta, you will thoroughly review all medical information and discuss your eligibility for a personalized semaglutide treatment plan.

How long will I need to stay on medication?

The duration varies based on individual response, goals, and overall health. Dr. Gupta will assess progress periodically and determine whether to continue or discontinue treatment based on how well you are responding.

How much weight can I expect to lose?

Studies show that individuals on weekly GLP-1 injections (semaglutide and tirzepatide) lose an average of 12-15% of body weight after one year at the full dose. Individual results vary and lifestyle habits have a significant impact. Research shows that even a 5% reduction in body weight can significantly improve hypertension, cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, PCOS, osteoarthritis, and more. What if side effects occur?

At Gupta Plastic Surgery, you will undergo multiple consultations with Dr. Gupta to determine the safest and most effective dose. Your response will be closely monitored. Many side effects are manageable, and it is rare that treatment must be stopped.

What is the best time to take your semaglutide medication?

Administer semaglutide once weekly on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without meals.

Does my semaglutide medication need to be refrigerated?

The medication is designed to be unrefrigerated during shipment and is stable in extreme temperatures. However, it should be kept in your refrigerator in the provided pouch to ensure freshness and stability.

Do I need to get lab work done?

Yes. Gupta Plastic Surgery requires complete lab work before initiating semaglutide to ensure safety. Lab results help determine whether semaglutide is appropriate for your individual needs.

What kind of bloodwork do I need?

Dr. Gupta will oversee key indicators including: Complete Blood Count (CBC), Complete Metabolic Panel (CMP), lipid panel (cholesterol and triglycerides), TSH, and HbA1c. These tests help identify liver, pancreatic, kidney, and thyroid issues before and during treatment.

How long will it take for my results?

Lab results typically return within 2-3 days after your visit. Dr. Gupta will review your results with you so you can begin your treatment plan.

Where do I get my bloodwork done?

We partner with Quest Diagnostics nationwide. Once labs are ordered, you will receive a notification and link to schedule your appointment at your convenience. Labs are required every 6 months.

Why do some companies not require bloodwork?

Some providers cut corners and fail to meet the standard of care. Gupta Plastic Surgery follows the principle of 'first, do no harm' and thoroughly screens each patient to rule out contraindications before prescribing semaglutide.

What is HbA1c, and why is it tested?

HbA1c stands for Glycated Hemoglobin. It measures average blood sugar over several months and is used to assess diabetes risk and long-term glucose control.

What is TSH, and why is it tested?

TSH stands for Thyroid Stimulating Hormone. Testing TSH helps evaluate thyroid function. Abnormal levels may indicate underactive or overactive thyroid conditions that affect metabolism and energy.

What are Lipids, and why are they tested?

Lipids support energy storage, insulation, and hormone production. Tests such as LDL, HDL, triglycerides, and total cholesterol give insight into cardiovascular health.

What is CMP, and why is it tested?

The Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) evaluates liver function, kidney function, blood sugar, and electrolyte balance. It helps detect metabolic and organ dysfunction.

What is CBC, and why is it tested?

A Complete Blood Count (CBC) measures red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. It helps identify anemia, infections, and blood disorders.
